From humble beginnings on the West Coast to rapidly growing on the East Coast, Avelo Airlines is expanding its route network once again. On September 8th, Avelo announced it will open a new base in Fort Myers, Florida in the fourth quarter of this year.
Avelo first introduced itself to the Florida market from its New Haven base to the cities of Orlando (MCO), Fort Myers (RSW), and Tampa (TPA) in November 2021. Due to the success of the Florida destinations with very high load factors, Avelo Airlines opted to open a new base at Fort Myers' Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW).
According to Avelo chairman Andrew Levy, the opening of the base will allow for the operation of more aircraft and will allow for more destinations to be served and passengers to be carried. The airline plans to initially base one of their 737s at Fort Myers and with the airline expecting to take on more 737NGs later this year, they may plan to base more at Fort Myers.
As announced in the Avelo press release, the airline expects to create more than 35 RSW-based jobs. These positions will be a combination of crewmembers and jobs with Avelo business partners operating at Fort Myers airport.
From the Fort Myers base this November, in addition to serving New Haven, Avelo will serve Raleigh-Durham (RDU), Binghamton (BGM), Kalamazoo (AZO), and Lansing (LAN).
