Lufthansa has announced its upcoming route plans for the summer of 2021. With the growing worldwide introduction of vaccines, Lufthansa is preparing for travel to quickly ramp up again. "Our leisure travel program for summer 2021 is stronger than ever. We expect many countries to relax travel restrictions towards the summer as more and more people have been vaccinated. We know that demand will increase sharply as soon as travel restrictions are removed - and we are well equipped to meet this with our excellent range of products and offers. There is a great yearning for travel and we believe that the summer months will reflect this," CEO of the Deutsche Lufthansa Airline Group, Harry Homeister, said.
For the Lufthansa Group, North America is a major destination. Swiss will resume service from Zurich-Miami 5x weekly on March 28th, Zurich-Boston 7x weekly starting May 1st, and on May 2nd service will be offered 5x weekly from Zurich-Los Angeles. Austrian will begin service again from Vienna to both New York's JFK and Montreal in May. Additionally, a new route from Frankfurt, Germany, to Anchorage, Alaska, operated by the new leisure-travel focused Lufthansa Group Airline Eurowings Discover, will begin in June.
The Lufthansa Group will work with Eurowings Discover to fly several long-haul routes from Frankfurt. There will be 2x weekly flights to Mombasa, Kenya, with continuing flights to Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Mauritius, and Male in the Maldives will be offered 2x weekly.
In Europe, the focus will be on Greece and the Canary Islands, making it easier to reach Greek or Spanish holiday destinations from Frankfurt or Munich. Additionally planned destinations from Frankfurt are Paphos, Cyprus; Rijeka, Croatia; Lamezia Terme, Italy; Djerba, Tunisia; Ponta Delgada, Azores/Portugal; and Varna, Bulgaria. From Munich, new destinations include Jerez, Spain, and the Greek Islands of Chania, Mykonos, Kos, Kavalla, Zakynthos, Preveza, and Hurghada, Egypt.
