Kenya Airways has renewed its codeshare agreement with China Eastern Airlines, reaffirming its commitment to providing seamless connectivity between Africa and China. In a November 28, 2024 statement, the airline highlighted the agreement’s role in enhancing travel options across both regions.
This partnership expands travel opportunities for passengers. Kenya Airways customers can now enjoy better connections to key Chinese destinations such as Shanghai, Kunming, Hangzhou, and Nanjing, all served by China Eastern Airlines. Meanwhile, travelers with China Eastern Airlines gain access to a wide range of African cities via Nairobi, including Dar es Salaam, Accra, Lagos, Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Maputo, and Mauritius.
“Our partnership with China Eastern Airlines underscores our commitment to offering greater connectivity to China and providing a seamless travel experience. This collaboration also reflects the strengthening economic and cultural ties between Africa and China,” said Martin Gitonga, Head of Network Planning and Alliances at Kenya Airways.
The codeshare renewal comes at a time of deepening relations between Africa and China, fueled by initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). As Africa’s largest trade partner, China has played a crucial role in infrastructure development, investments, and collaborative projects across the continent. This partnership further supports these efforts by improving accessibility for businesspeople, investors, and tourists.
Kenya Airways previously operated direct flights to cities such as Guangzhou and Hong Kong. However, capacity reductions during a restructuring phase in 2015 led to adjustments in operations. Currently, the airline flies to Guangzhou via Bangkok. In April 2023, Kenya Airways also renewed its interline agreement with China Southern Airlines, responding to increased demand for international travel to China.
Loyalty program members also benefit from the codeshare renewal. Kenya Airways’ Asante Rewards members can now earn points on flights operated by China Eastern Airlines, enhancing their travel experiences. As members of the SkyTeam Alliance—Kenya Airways since 2007 and China Eastern Airlines since 2011—both airlines provide customers with access to a global network of rewards and privileges.
Kenya Airways continues to maintain codeshare agreements with numerous global carriers, broadening its network reach. Some of its key partners include KLM, Air France, Delta Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, South African Airways, Precision Air, ITA Airways, Saudia, British Airways, Air Mauritius, Asky Airlines, LAM Mozambique, EgyptAir, Royal Air Maroc, Air Burkina, Air Europa, and Vietnam Airlines.
